Augsburg stun Bayern Munich in Bavarian derby

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat against Augsburg in Bavarian
derby on Friday night. A surprising victory moved Augsburg out of the relegation zone and
earned a historic win over their local rivals.
Goals from Mads Pedersen and Andre Hahn in the first half gave the hosts the comfortable lead,
before Robert Lewandowski pulled a goal back for the visitors, as Augsburg surprisingly grabbed all
three points.
"It was not an undeserved win for Augsburg. I am disappointed and for the first time as Bayern coach
really frustrated. What we did was not enough to get a point” - said Bayern’s coach Julian
Nagelsmann after the game.

Though Nagelsmann's side dominated in the game, it was the hosts who scored first. Twenty-three
minutes into the first half, Mads Pedersen struck on the volley past Manuel Neuer, scoring his first
Bundesliga goal in 27 appearances for the club.
Augsburg doubled their lead twelve minutes later when Marcel Sabitzer lost the possession in
Bayern’s own half, and Andre Hahn headed in a perfect Iago’s cross from the left-hand side.
However, the visitors fought back immediately as Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski
volleyed the ball past his fellow countryman Rafal Gikiewicz in the 38th minute. It was
Lewandowski's 14th goal this season, while Thomas Muller marked his 600th appearance for Bayern
Munich with an effective backheel assist to the Pole.
The visitors dominated in the second half, but they failed to create a clear goal opportunity until the
73rd minute when Alfonso Davies's low strike went just wide. Six minutes later, Lewandowski could
have equalised, but Gikiewicz denied his close-range shot, and Augsburg took all three crucial points.
The result lifted Augsburg into the 15th spot in the league and secured their third win over Bayern in
21 Bundesliga games, with Markus Weinzierl being the coach on each occasion.
Bayern Munich, despite the loss, remained at the top of the table, but Borussia Dortmund Saturday’s
win over VfB Stuttgart, see them just one point behind the Bundesliga leaders.
