Chelsea: Club of The Year

By Jan Zyla

On the 29th of November 2021 at the Ballon D’or ceremony, the 2021 Champions League winners Chelsea were named the inaugural winners of the Club of the Year award. It has been a year to remember for Chelsea in 2021 following both success on and off the field for both the Men's and Women's teams.
Firstly, Chelsea’s men’s team the former won their second ever Champions League title against all odds, beating clear favourites Premier League Champions Manchester City in a marvellous night here in Porto. Whereas the Chelsea Women’s team was a was a force to be reckoned with at the domestic level, Emma Hayes’ team won the Women’s Super League and the League Cup while getting to the Women’s Champions League final for the first time in their history.
2021 started with Frank Lampard managing the men’s team however due to poor results in the Premier League, the higher-ups at the club were forced to sack the Chelsea legendary midfielder and go in a new direction and that direction was the German manager who previously managed Paris Saint Germain and that is Thomas Tuchel. All of a sudden the hunger and fight that seemed to be missing under Frank Lampard came back with Havertz and the other German players seeming to finally come alive under Tuchel and all that lead to eventually the Champions League final against Manchester City in which Chelsea dominated and even though it was only a 1-0 due to Kai Havertz’ goal, ask anyone that the only winner that could have possibly come out of the match was Chelsea.
Furthermore, in the 2020/21 season Chelsea under Tuchel finished 4th which is remarkable as with Frank Lampard in charge the team looked like they will finish around 7th and 8th. Also, adding to that since the start of the 2021/22 Premier League season Chelsea find themselves as league leaders on 33 points after 14 games 1 point clear of Manchester City and 2 points clear of Liverpool with a goal difference of +27 to Chelsea’s name. In the whole season up to this point they just had 1 loss, scored 33 goals and conceded just 6 in 14 games. Also, in other competitions in the 2021/22 season Chelsea are still in every competition. Chelsea face Brentford in the Carabao Cup, the FA cup is also still to be drawn as to who Chelsea will face in the 3rd round and in the Champions League Chelsea who are of course the defending Champions have qualified to the last 16 already with a 4-0 win over Juventus. Adding to that Chelsea have the Russian giant Zenit in their final Champions’ League group game away. If Chelsea get a win there as well, they will finish as group winners.
In conclusion, Chelsea is the 1st ever Club of the Year winners and it is very easy to see why as the Blues have dominated all of 2021 since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, winning the Champions League against Manchester City in Porto, Portugal and to this date dominating the domestic league and cups with their scintillating performances on the pitch.
