England World Cup Run Up
By Callum Patrick
England look to continue their good performances from their group stage campaign with wins over Iran and Wales and a cagey draw against the USA. England topped group B and go through to the last 16 to face Senegal. This will not be an easy test for Gareth Southgate’s men as they look to continue their hard work to push towards the final stages of the World Cup.

England will face the current AFCON Champions Senegal who beat Egypt in the final of the African Cup of Nations in February. However, Senegal will be without their talisman Sadio Mane who all of the England team will know very well from his time in the Premier League at Liverpool, where he won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Community Shield. Sadio Mane has become a Senegalese legend on and off the pitch by leading the current AFCON Champions to their first win in 2021 by defeating Egypt on penalties with Mane dispatching the winner.

Senegal is currently ranked 18th in the World where England are currently ranked 5th in the world, and with the players England have at their disposal it should be a simple task to beat Senegal and advance to the quarter finals. However, this is far from a simple task for England and their potential journey to the World Cup final. If England beat Senegal, they can expect to face the winners between France and Poland which are expected to be the current world cup champions, France. First things first, England must beat Senegal if they want to progress to the next stage and then they could face France. Secondly, if they face France, which nation hosts some of the best footballers on the planet, will make the game a very tight encounter. France are currently the world champions having won the 2018 World Cup in Russia making this a massive game for England to try and reach the semi-finals of this year’s world cup, the same round they went out to Croatia last time.
