Manchester United’s season so far
By Orient Mylla
There has been a vast amount of hope and excitement surrounding Manchester United, stemming from the appointment of Erik Ten Hag. The club have been struggling to get back to their rampant success for the last few years, since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Last season was a season to forget for Manchester Unite and it’s fans, as they finished 6th that season and 35 points behind their local rivals Manchester City.
Manchester United recruited really well in the summer transfer window by making some very impressive signings. Although the transfer window in the end was a success, fans were voicing their opinion, as there were numerous amounts of comments that were posted on social media about the lack of signings at the beginning of the transfer window. Fans were not let down as United went on to sign Antony Matheus dos Santos from Ajax and 5-time champions league winner Carlos Henrique Casimiro from Real Madrid. Including Christian Eriksen from Brentford and Lisandro Martinez from Ajax who were early transfers.
Newly appointed Manager, Erik Ten Hag was beginning a new journey in his managerial chapter as he was taking on, one of the toughest jobs in the world. The majority of the fan base felt excited of the arrival of the dutchman, whilst some felt a bit apprehensive.
Pre-season began and the excitement levels went up massively as Manchester United beat their fiercest rivals Liverpool 4-0 in July, at the Rajamangala Stadium. This result made United fans eager for the season to start as they thought they would kick start their premier league season with a win. The feeling of optimism carried out through the whole pre-season campaign as Erik Ten Hag’s men went unbeaten in all pre-season games.
This season kicked off with a tough test at Old Trafford to Brighton Hove Albion. The atmosphere was great, as the Manchester United fans got right behind their newly manager Ten Hag. If only the players transferred the fans energy onto the pitch, Ten Hag’s reds would go onto losing their first game of the season 2-1 at home. As this was the first game for new signing Lisandro Martinez, he was already under scrutiny for his height. The 5ft 9in centre back was on the receiving end of some horrible backlash as United were defeated at home.
August saw Manchester United pick up three wins from their first five league games, with their most shocking defeat coming from Brentford. So, after the 2-1 victory against Liverpool at home, that win really spurred on Ten Hag’s men to three successive wins in the league.
September was a good month for United, as Ten Hag’s reds managed to pick up 6 points out of their 2 games in the league, with their most impressive win coming against Arsenal at home. Although they managed to gain the maximum number of points in the league, they failed to do so in the Europa league as they lost against Real Sociedad in the group stage opener 1-0 at home but went onto to see off Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol 2-0 away from home, with goals coming from Jadon Sancho & Cristiano Ronaldo.
The games continued and many teams, including Manchester United were facing tough tasks. After the passing of her majesty Queen Elizabeth, Manchester United’s derby test against Leeds was postponed. October was more of a positive month for Manchester United, as they went unbeaten in 6 apart from the horror show at the beginning of the month against local rivals Manchester city, where ‹they got totally outplayed and beaten 6-3 away from home. United picked up wins against Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, and Sheriff.
Now that more than a third of the season has been played, many fans realize that the league table slowly starts to form around this time of year. Manchester United currently sit 5th with 3 points behind top 4 position Tottenham with a game in hand. United fans would feel content with the start that they had back in August.
November has been an excellent month so far for Erik Ten Hag and his players as they have won 3 out of their 4 games this month. Picking up wins away to Real Sociedad in the Europa league, and newly promoted Fulham. They’ve also started sharply in the carabao cup as they brushed off premier league side Aston Villa 4-2 at home. Manchester United are starting to look more and more like the finished article, so the race for a place back in the champions league is well and truly on.
