Premier League Match Report - Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

Jose Mourinho’s men travelled up north to a sunny St, James’ Park to face a deflated Newcastle side who are currently battling for the last relegation spot with Fulham. After Saturday’s games saw Chelsea get thrashed 5-2 by West Bromwich Albion, Jose’s men had the chance to jump up to 4th place in the league, with all three points to claim; allowing them the opportunity to gain the last Champions League spot by the end of the season.
After twenty-eight minutes striker Joelinton broke the deadlock from a poor clearance by Tottenham’s centre back Davison Sanchez. This saw the Magpies get a great opportunity to open the Tottenham defence and Steve Bruce’s side took full advantage of this to make it 1-0. Just two minutes after conceding, Jose’s men launched a series of counter-attacks that saw Harry Kane score two goals within four minutes, which granted them a 2-1 lead into the half time break.
As the second half got underway, Tottenham attempted to seek out one last goal to hopefully cement the full three points, to take back to North London. It was back and forth up till the 85th minute which saw a successful Tottenham counterattack lead by substitute Erik Lamela. After making a confident run into the Newcastle box, the ball rolled left for Harry Kane just inside the penalty area to seal the hat-trick. But a turn of events saw Kane’s balance and timing fail him and he missed the target, hitting the outside of the post for a goal kick. Seconds later saw Newcastle launch a dangerous counterattack that saw a deep cross into the box which was volleyed into the back of Hugo Lloris’ net by Joe Willock to finish the game 2-2.
Overall, a well-earned point for the Magpies which still sees them treading water at the bottom of the league, with a lot of work to do going forward into the final weeks of the season. However their sheer determination to fight against relegation helped them claw their way back from 2-1 down against one of the top six. On the other hand, the Lilywhites are going back to north London with defensive errors to work on for next week’s big game against Manchester United. A final note, after scoring a brace today, Harry Kane returns home as the current leading goal scorer of the premier league.
