Colchester United vs Newport County Match Report

By Toni-lea Poll

A late Freddie Sears strike denied promotion hopefuls Newport County a decisive 3 points in a 1-1 stalemate at the Jobserve Community Stadium against Colchester United. Toni-lea Poll reports…

MATCH REPORT: Newport were just 12 minutes away from emerging into a play-off position, before Freddie Sears saved Colchester’s blushes and broke Welsh hearts with an expertly chipped ball over goalie Joe Day.
Luke Hannants ball over the top set striker Sears through on goal to slot the ball home to earn his side 4 points from six as they pulled themselves comfortably out from the relegation zone.
However, Newport striker Dom Telford was unfortunate not to take the headlines, as his initial strike took his goal total to 11 for the season, earning him top goal scorer in League Two.
Despite a Colchester second half equaliser, Newport came out of the blocks quickly and were dominant in the first 45 minutes having several chances to double their lead, their best coming from Telford whose long-range curling effort rattled the crossbar.
However, after the break the Us redeemed themselves and a late penalty shout could have earned them a potential impressive comeback, but the points were shared – a valuable one for relegation battling Colchester.
