UFC 269: Charles Oliveira Vs. Dustin Poirier

By Jan Zyla

On the 12th of December 2021 Charles Oliveira will take on Dustin Poirier in a Lightweight Bout at UFC 269 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier 3rd fight is done and dusted; Poirier moves on to fight Charles Oliveira.

Dustin Poirier gained the upper hand in his rivalry with Conor McGregor and one they call The Diamond earned a first-round TKO victory due to a doctor stoppage in the main event of UFC 264. In the fight against Conor McGregor, the Irish Superstar started the fight as the aggressor and McGregor looked like he would cause problems for Poirier during the course of the fight.

However, in the end Poirier began gaining control after the fight went to the ground in the third minute. A failed guillotine choke attempt from McGregor allowed Poirier to take advantage of the grounded McGregor. The Diamond Dustin Poirier began exploding with a ton of ground strikes, primarily hitting McGregor with elbows and although McGregor ate several blows, he withstood the storm. Furthermore, just as the 1st round was about to end, both of the fighters got back on their feet, and in the most unexpected and unlikeliest of moments, McGregor broke his left Ankle after landing awkwardly on the octagon mat. The fight ended with a doctors stoppage and the fight was awarded to Dustin Poirier due to McGregor being unfit to continue deemed by the doctors and referee. With the win Poirier earned himself the shot at UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira.

Charles Oliveira won the lightweight championship a couple of months ago as Oliveira beat UFC newcomer Michael Chandler in the second round of their fight in the main event of UFC 262. By winning the lightweight title, Charles Oliveira became the first lightweight champion after Khabib Nurmagomedov who also recently retired and the first Brazilian lightweight champion since Rafael dos Anjos in 2016.

This leads to Oliveira Vs. Poirier Charles Oliveira is a dangerous fighter style-wise when it comes to most of his opponents. The Brazilian fighter holds a third-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and does not lack in any way when it comes to knockout power as well which was very evident during his win over Michael Chandler at UFC 262.
On the other hand, Dustin Poirier has elite ground skills too. The man they call The Diamond also holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and adding to that, he has been running riot in the UFC, as he is in the form of his life beating of course the Irish Superstar Conor McGregor not once but twice. Furthermore, Dustin Poirier is a heavy lightweight and the man is too wide for a lightweight. Just after the weigh-ins he loads up and weighs in, at least 20 pounds heavier on the day of the fight. This, coupled with his elite grappling skills can very well challenge Oliveira’s dangerous ground game.

Also, when it comes to striking, Poirier is an elite boxer. Oliveira might be slightly better on the ground, but he does not come even close to Poirier’s boxing. So maybe quite rightly most of the people who have given their prediction go with a win for Dustin Poirier as he is in very good form and it looks like he has way more to offer in a fight than Charles Oliveira. However, nothing is for sure in the UFC Octagon and one simple mistake from The Diamond could land the win for Oliveira we just have to wait and see.
